![]() The story of Honolulu's streetcars is one of entrepreneurial visionaries, engineering and mechanical wizards, skillful craftsmen, conscientious motormen and conductors, and-of course-the occasional rogue and sharpster. It is a story of men lacing Honolulu with tracks and overhead wires, and creating new homes, new neighborhoods and new opportunities. It is a story of the riders-men and women headed to work, children to school, families to the beach, the Aquarium-from their new homes in Kalihi, Manoa and Kaimuki, and elsewhere along the routes. Streetcars created Honolulu's first expansion, from the crowded little city hard up against a harbor, to one with spacious green suburbs. At a nickel out, and a nickel back. And barrels of fun and camaraderie along the way! This is the story of the creation of modern Honolulu, and of the creators and the communities created. |
